Feed giant BioMar highlighted the benefits of microalgae as a sustainable feed ingredient with high levels of omega-3.
Vidar Gundersen, global sustainability director at BioMar, said the company will continue to develop sustainable marine ingredients that could replace fishmeal, and to exploit microalgae for aquaculture purposes.
The company uses algae-based feed ingredient AlgaPrime, which was developed by company TerraVia.
“I consider this particular product to be the most sustainable raw material available for the production of salmon feed,” Gundersen said.
“Utilizing marine fatty acids from microalgae simply gives us the possibility to increase or maintain the content of omega-3 in feeds, in a sustainable way.”
