Researchers at Hobart's Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies from the University of Tasmania developed a hatchery that allows farming of rock lobster for the first time without the use of antibiotics, reportsABC Net.
"Since the 1980s, people have been able to rear very small numbers of rock lobsters, but it's been on the scale of being able to do it in a beaker, and using various things like antibiotics,” said Greg Smith, associate professor at the University of Tasmania.
Senior research fellow Quinn Fitzgibbon said the opportunities for science were also exciting, claiming being able to culture these species in a laboratory will help scientists understand the rock lobster larval stages.
