The krill quota will most likely never be fully fished, according to Aker Biomarine. The company, which has two vessels in operation, is the first and only Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)-certified for krill fishing.
The crustacean krill is found in colossal quantities in the southern ocean. Biomass for the fishing area is estimated at a staggering 60 million metric tons.
The quota, which is regulated by an international committee, CCAMLR, is according to the precautionary principle set at 1 percent, or 620,000 metric tons.
