Lobstermen in the lower Bay of Fundy on Monday began pushing thousands of traps overboard as live buyers eagerly await holiday supplies.

The season in lobster fishing area (LFA) 33 and 34 lasts through May 31.

Last year, landings in Nova Scotia topped 24,000 metric tons worth over CAD$323 million ($275.9 million; €236 million); about 70 percent of that catch comes from LFA 34.

Most of the catch from the fishery will go to the live market for the holiday season.

An extremely strong market for lobster (Homarus Americanus) throughout the summer and early fall months thanks to dismal catches in Maine kept buyers at arms length.
