Mercadona is keen to sell on the assets of Caladero, industry sources told IntraFish. These include the €110 million ($150 million) modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) seafood plant in Zaragoza -- which covers 58,000-square-meters and has the capacity to process 750,000 MAP trays daily -- a range of other plants in Spain and fishing quota in South Africa.

“They are a retailer, not a seafood processor,” said one source. “Of course they do not want to own it, but they had to do what they did [acquire Caladero] to ensure continuity of supply.”

The
