One of the largest Murray Cod farms in Australia has opened on the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, reports ABC Rural.

The Marianvale Blue Cod Farm at Towrang plans to produce 200 metric tons of the native freshwater fish each year for Australian restaurants and southeast Asian markets.

Most Murray Cod farms in Australia currently produce about 25 metric tons of the fish annually.

The Murray Cod is a threatened species and isn't commercially harvested from the wild.

Director of Marianvale Blue, Ayal Marek, says there's growing competition from China, which is trying to start its own Murray Cod industry.

"So it's time for Australia to pick up the game and really promote the export industry," he said.

"So Thailand, Hong Kong, China -- we see great positive response and feedback so far and we are at the moment looking at potential joint ventures with local marketers to take it to these markets."
