Portuguese operators and processors in the dried and salted cod market are suffering under pressure from companies in Norway and the ongoing economic crisis in Europe, one importer told IntraFish.
Prior to the financial crisis in 2008, the Portuguese bacalao market was predominantly supplied by Portuguese processors, who would import wet salted or frozen headed and gutted (H&G) cod from Norway, Russia and the United States, said Jorge Camarneiro, director of Porto-based bacalao importer IT Comércio.
“They would process or dry it here in Portugal and then distribute it,” he told IntraFish.
The
