Norway-based salmon egg producer SalmoBreed is challenging AquaBounty’s claims that salmon farmers won’t be able to resist using AquaBounty's genetically modified (GM) salmon because traditionally-produced fish can’t compete with the growth rates of the fish.
U.S.-based AquaBounty is awaiting U.S. government approval of its genetically modified salmon, which the company claims grows twice as fast as typical farm-raised salmon.
SalmoBreed, which uses breeding programs to produce salmon eggs with a range of desirable traits such as disease and parasite resistance, can also give its customers fast-growing stock where this is a required quality, the company said.
