The company says the extensive storm damage has left it with little choice. More than 600,000 fish died or were lost when farm cages were destroyed throughout Scotland, according to Scottish Executive figures
After the January 11 storms manpower was focused on repairing the damage caused to the farms, boats and feed barges. Fish have been fed but not up to their optimum weight for harvesting. Consequently Fjord’s factory has been left without sufficient salmon to process. Around 120 people are based at its Marybank facility on the outskirts of Stornoway.
